When to Renew Your Vietnamese Passport?

You should renew your Vietnamese passport immediately if you encounter any of the following situations:


  • The passport has less than 1 year remaining or has expired.
  • The passport has no blank pages left.
  • The passport is torn, blurred, or has smudged information.
  • The passport is lost but you still have a copy.
  • The passport is handwritten from the 1990s.
  • The photo on the passport no longer resembles your current face due to cosmetic surgery.

Procedure for Renewing a Vietnamese Passport in the USA

To renew a Vietnamese passport in the US, you need to prepare:

 

  1. Color passport photo with a white background, facing forward, no glasses.
  2. Pages 2 & 3 of the old passport (pages with photo, stamp, and signature).
  3. Valid residency documents such as:
    • For Vietnamese residing in the USA: Green Card/U.S. Passport/Certificate of U.S. Nationality.
    • For students: I-20, DS 2019.
    • If not yet allowed to reside in the USA: I-94, I-797A.
  4. If you need to add a new name or new ID number to your passport, submit proof documents such as the new ID card, name change certificate, etc. (additional fee applies).

Note: For handwritten Vietnamese passports from the 1990s, you need to send the original passport to the Vietnamese Consulate in the USA for verification.

Vietnamese Passport Validity

  • Passports issued to citizens aged 14 and older are valid for 10 years from the date of issue.
  • Passports issued to children under 14 years old are valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
